UPCOMING SHOW AT THE PLAYHOUSE
Date: 24 May 2025Venue: Drama Theatre
Isicathamiya is a lively singing style that comes from the Zulu people of South Africa. It is similar to the European singing style known as a cappella, where singers perform without instruments. Isicathamiya is different from an earlier Zulu style called mbube, which means “lion.” While mbube focuses on powerful singing, Isicathamiya emphasizes blending voices in harmony.
This unique style is also associated with energetic dance moves, making the performances visually exciting. Traditionally, Isicathamiya choirs are made up of all male members. The roots of this singing tradition go back to before the 1900s when many Zulu men moved to cities in search of work.No under 4
