Amambazo the Musical, in association with the Playhouse Company, an agency of the Department of Arts and Culture, present a musical created by Professor J. Shalala and directed by Edmund Mhlongo, paying tribute to internationally acclaimed South African Ischatamiya group, Ladysmith Black Mamabazo. Though the carefully selected music of the group, AMAMBAZO tells the story of a young man longing for the love of a beautiful maiden Nomathemba. After a series of struggles, challenges, competitions, sufferings –the young man finally received his victory – imbazo – the axe (music charm) helps him to achieve historic victory. AMAMBAZO can be interpreted as the subtext of South Africa’s journey from suffering to historic democracy in 1994 – a story of peace, unity and reconciliation.
