A musical created by Professor J. Shabalala directed by Edmund Mhlongo paying tribute to internationally acclaimed South African Ischatamiya group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Though the carefully selected music of the group, AMAMBAZO tells the story of a young man longing for the love of a beautiful young maiden, Nomathemba. After a series of struggles, challenges, competitions, sufferings – the young man finally received his victory – imbazo – the axe (music charm) helps him to achieve historic victory. AMAMBAZO can be interpreted as the subtext of South Africa’s journey from suffering to historic democracy in 1994 – a story of peace, unity and reconciliation.
