There’s a golden rule about the importance of culture in South African society which says that all individuals must feel free to explore the uniqueness of their culture and identity while developing understandings of the cultural diversity that exists around them.

That sentiment holds so true with the highly popular annual Ingoma Competition which the Playhouse Company hosts this year at the SJ Smith (WEMA) Sports Ground on Human Rights day, March 21 from 9am to 4pm.

Playhouse Company’s Chief Executive and Artistic Director, Linda Bukhosini is excited about this annual event because it helps bring together music and dance enthusiasts from all corners of our province.

“We are delighted to be able to present this highly popular event as part of our on-going programme of engaging with our audience – particularly those whose culture embraces these genres of traditional dance which are such a rich part of the history of KwaZulu-Natal,” she said.

For the uninitiated, Ingoma is a traditional Zulu dance which was performed by Zulu warriors before going into battle.
It’s a chance to see how these warriors (both male and female) compete against each other as they fight for the title of the best Ingoma dance group.

This year, the competition will include the following categories: Ingoma, Isgekle, Ushameni, Ingoma yezintombi, Ingoma Sikhuze and Indlamu.

The MCs for the event will be Mdu Jali and Ukhozi FM presenter, Ngizwe Mchunu.
