Khwela Bafana is a musically exhilarating show celebrating the resilience of the human spirit during a period of adversity and hardship during the 50’s in South Africa. Set in Sis Peggy’s shebeen in Sophiatown it loosely tells the story of how she, her daughter and friends reacted to their forced removal to Meadowlands in Soweto. Khwela honours the music of the 50’s and composers such as Todd Matshikiza, Victor Ndlazilwane, The Manhattan Brothers and others.

Devised and directed by renowned playwrights Phyllis Klotz and Smal Ndaba, music directed by multi SAMA award winner Themba Mkhize, choreography by Todd Twala and Cassius Tlhothalemaje. Bra “B” Ngwenya, an original member of the King Kong cast, brings a true authenticity to Kwela supported by a four piece band. From penny whistling to acappella harmonies to energetic jiving mixed in with plenty of audience interaction, Khwela will have you tapping your feet and walking on air.
