Matthew Hurt’s critically acclaimed Sailing Somewhere, with songs written by Conor Mitchell, is a darkly funny and powerful new play the opens the festival, playing in the Playhouse Loft Theatre on 3 and 4 August. Sometimes funny, sometimes haunting and totally gripping, the play is a portrait of a woman’s voyage across the stormy waters of her life. Counting down the days until she docks, a lounge singer on a cruise ship faces a painful dilemma: whether or not to be reunited with her estranged daughter. As she gets closer to land, she gets closer to facing herself too.
Sailing Somewhere premiered in 2011 to rave reviews and stars top South African actress, Fiona Ramsey, with Tony Bental accompanying her on the piano. Ramsey gives an astonishing, not-to-be-missed performance full of poignant humour, courage and drama.
Sailing Somewhere is directed by Vanessa Cooke with set design by Andrew Botha, and produced by Daphne Kuhn by arrangement with Mark Hawkins.
