The Passion Play, based on Jesus Christ’s last days on earth, is undoubtedly one of the major highlights of Durban’s arts calendar.
Those who’ve had the pleasure of seeing the production before will confirm that this is not just a play – it is a great experience that will move you as no other production can.
Presented in partnership with the Durban Catholic Players Guild, it follows the Biblical Gospels that the Oberammergau script is based on.
The first Passion Play in Durban was performed in 1952 when the then Mayor and community of Oberammergau in Bavaria granted special permission to the Durban Catholic Players Guild to stage an abridged version of their world famous play. It has since been staged in Durban every 5 years and this is the 14th production since the inception.
The cast comprises 120 amateur actors from all religious denominations and ages.
