Singer Deloris Carter, the girlfriend of a prominent gangster, witnesses a gangland murder and is forced to flee with criminals in pursuit. Seeking safety, she turns to a local police station, where the New York Police Department places her in protective custody at a convent, hidden among a group of nuns until the gangsters are apprehended and she can testify.

The collision between the convent’s strict, disciplined lifestyle and Deloris’s bold, flamboyant personality sparks a series of hilarious and heartfelt moments. As penance for her rebellious behaviour, she is tasked with coaching the convent choir a challenge that leads to an unexpected transformation. Under her spirited guidance, the struggling choir becomes a sensational musical success, while Deloris forms unlikely friendships that change her life forever.
