Umnikelo (Offering), the acclaimed 40-minute dance production created by renowned choreographer Luyanda Sidiya, is set to grace the stage at The Playhouse Theatre in Durban for two exclusive performances on 6 December 2024 at 18:00 and 7 December 2024 at 14:00.

Since premiering in Johannesburg in 2011 and later showcasing at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in 2012, Umnikelo has earned global acclaim following its performance at the Kuopio Dance Festival in Finland in 2013.

In Umnikelo, the concept of an offering is portrayed as a voluntary act of submission to a higher power, reflecting ancient practices of using organized chaos to mirror the internal turmoil of the mind. Through mesmerizing choreography, the dancers embody the ritual of surrender to deities or spiritual forces, where dance, music and rhythm become tools for connecting to the divine.

The production features the dynamic talent of the Luthando Arts Academy dancers, with original music compositions by Luyanda Sidiya, Xolisile Bongwana, Isaac Molelekoa, Nompumelelo Nhlapo and Anele Ndebele. The production’s striking visuals will be complemented by Oliver Hauser’s lighting design, Luvuyo Msila’s costumes and Teboho Moloto’s expert sound design.
