In 1963, at the height of Apartheid in South Africa, the government under Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd intensified its brutal crackdown on resistance movements, plunging the nation into turmoil. In Durban, Eleanor—a young single mother working at Griggs Bookstore—finds herself caught in the crosshairs. Arrested and interrogated under the infamous 90-day detention law, she is suspected of having ties to Red Ronnie Kasrils, a wanted “terrorist” accused of sabotage. But Eleanor is no ordinary citizen; she is a covert operative for the banned African National Congress. Facing relentless questioning and the threat of indefinite detention, she hatches a desperate plan: to feign a mental breakdown and secure a transfer to a psychiatric institution—where escape might still be possible.
