UPCOMING SHOW AT THE PLAYHOUSE
Date: 27 June 2025Venue: Drama Theatre
Lu Dlamini’s highly anticipated album launch is more than a musical event—it’s a heartfelt journey through love, legacy, and the untold stories that connect us. Gido, her latest body of work, is a tapestry of musical brilliance, woven together by a collective of extraordinary artists, creators, and mentors who brought their talent and spirit to every track. Each collaborator—whether through instrument or production—poured their soul into the music, honouring the core themes of unity and storytelling at the heart of Gido.
The album features collaborations with some of South Africa’s most celebrated musical talents, including:
All songs have been expertly mastered by David Birch.
Lu Dlamini describes Gido as a tribute to her late mother, Kitomena (Gido) uMakhuzwayo—an ode to the wisdom, love, and resilience her mother embodied. “This is a call for unity,” says Lu, “and a way to honour my mother and her teachings.”
The album’s title, Gido, is derived from her mother’s given name, Kitomena—bestowed upon her in 1929 during a time when the place called Kitomena was making headlines. Known today as Cato Manor (or Umkhumbane), this Durban community once mirrored the spirit of Sophiatown and District Six—a vibrant melting pot where diverse cultures lived together in harmony.
By naming the album Gido, Lu offers more than music—she presents a living tribute to a matriarch whose influence shaped generations. This project is a bridge between past and present, a celebration of heritage, and a melodic call for healing and unity in a divided world.
The launch event will open with a special screening of The Golden Nile Meridian, setting the tone for an evening of soul-stirring reflection and celebration.
